On Saturday 12 March 2016, a small group of 7 (1 from France, 1 from Colombia, 3 from Japan, 1 from Korea and myself) left Auckland Institute of Studies at 10am and headed for Auckland’s west coast. We stopped at Lynnmall for food, which we took with us for a picnic, on the way and arrived at Piha at approximately 11.15am.

While it was cool at AIS in the morning, the weather was warm, about 23 degrees, at the coast and we had a blue sky with some clouds for most of the day, although there were more clouds late afternoon. We first walked up the steep, narrow track to Tasman Lookout, and we had great views over the beach from there.
After this, we went back down to the beach and had a thoroughly enjoyable swim at high tide. The surf was average height but quite powerful.
Everybody was getting hungry so we then drove to Karekare Beach and walked to the Falls for a picnic. After lunch, we explored Karekare Beach as the tide was going out.
Late afternoon, we went back to Piha to look around the ‘gap’ area at low tide, an area which was covered in water when we were at Piha at high tide earlier in the day.
Finally, it was starting to get cooler so we left the beach at 7pm, returning to AIS at about 7.50pm. We had done a lot of walking and swimming so everyone was a little tired and quite hungry but satisfied with a highly enjoyable day.
