On Saturday 18 November, a group of 7 plus myself went to Piha Beach, Karekare Falls and Karekare Beach. The day was relatively warm, about 22 degrees, but it was mostly cloudy and we had a few spots of rain late afternoon but that didn’t stop us from having a thoroughly enjoyable time. This trip is designed to highlight the best of both Piha and Karekare beaches. We go to Piha Beach twice (low tide and high tide) with a visit to Karekare Beach and waterfall in between.
At low tide at Piha, we walk to the area known as the Gap which is to the south of the beach. Here we explore the Gap and the Keyhole as well as looking in rock pools to observe the pool ecosystem. At high tide when the Gap and Keyhole area is mostly underwater, we walk up a short but steep track to Tasman Lookout for wonderful views of the beach looking north and then follow a track along the cliff top to where it overlooks the Gap and southern areas. In summer, a swim at Piha is an unforgettable experience if you enjoy swimming in surf. During autumn and winter we often stay for sunset.
At Karekare, we have a picnic lunch (bring your lunch) at Karekare Falls before walking to a lookout over the beach and walking down a small track to the beach. We have ample time to explore Karekare Beach. This trip requires lots of walking but isn’t a problem for moderately fit people.

On Saturday 4 June, I collected 2 Koreans from their apartment in the central city and we went to two of Auckland’s beautiful west coast beaches. We departed at 10am and arrived at Piha Beach after a 45 minute drive, much of it through the Scenic Drive in the Waitakere Mountain Range. On Saturday 14 May 2016 I picked up 6 people at Auckland Institute of Studies at 9.50am, 4 people at their apartment in the city at 10.15am and the final passenger at Britomart a few minutes later. This made a group of 9 from South Korea, 2 from Japan and myself, and we went to Piha and Karekare.
