Poor Knights Diving
We set off early at 5.30am for the 2 hour 30 minute drive to Tutukaka. We stopped a couple of times for photos of the sunrise and farmlands. On arrival at Tutukaka, we checked in at the dive shop and organised our diving equipment which the boat crew put on the boat for us. The boat ‘Calypso’ left at 8.45am for the hour trip out to the islands.
It was to be a perfect day – no wind, a clear blue sky and about 26 – 28 degrees C. We encountered a few dolphins on the way to the islands so the boat stopped for a short while and when the dolphins moved on, so did we. When we arrived at our first dive spot, there were heaps of fish – trevally, kahawai and blue maomao- feeding on the surface of the water – a great start to the day.
Diving was wonderful – deep blue sea – great underwater visibility – about 25 to 30 metres – and lots of fishlife including stingrays, eagle rays, wrasse, demoiselles.
Between the dives, the boat went into the largest sea cave in the world ‘Rikoriko Cave’. Many boats can fit in there at the same time.
It was then time for the second dive and we found that while we had been having lunch, the crew had changed our dive tanks for us – great service. After the second dive, we went on a short boat trip around the islands and then headed back, arriving at Tutukaka at about 4.15pm.
Back in Tutukaka, we saw a marlin which had just been caught in the area, being weighed. We then headed back to Auckland after a perfect day of diving.
