On Thursday 4 February 2016, a group of AIS students (3 from Thailand, 1 from France, 1 from Colombia, 3 from Japan, 1 from Korea, 2 from China and 1 from Taiwan) and I left AIS at 2.30pm and went to Bethells Beach in west Auckland. It is also known by its Maori name Te Henga.

Destination: Bethells Beach
It was a fine but partly cloudy day with a temperature of about 26 degrees C. This beach has recently been used by Taylor Swift for the start and finish of her music video ‘Out of the Woods’ and she recently said it is the most beautiful beach she has been to. Bethells Beach is often used for filming TV programs like ‘The Shannara Chronicles’ and movies because of its remote and wild atmosphere.
There were very few people apart from the lifeguards on the beach even though it was the height of summer. We walked to the north of Bethells Beach and through some small sea caves, where we often had to wait for a short time (30 seconds to a minute) so we could dodge the coming and going sea without getting too wet.
This led us to a short hill climb and then a short downhill bush walk and on to a small cove totally hidden from the main beach area. We explored this area for a while – checking out the cove and climbing to the top of some rock formations.
After this, we headed out to the main beach and over a small sand dune to O’Neills Bay where we were the only people. We only had time for a short walk on O’Neills because this was a half-day trip and after a while, we went back to the main area of Bethells Beach where some of us had a thoroughly enjoyable swim in the surf.
We got back to AIS at about 7pm.
