On Saturday 12 December 2015, a group of 6 (2 from Korea, 2 from China and 2 from Thailand) left Auckland Institute of Studies at 9.30am and went to Muriwai Beach where we had surfing lessons from Muriwai Surf School. The day was warm, about 23 degrees, but there was a strong wind and the day was very cloudy.

Muriwai Beach Surfing Lessons
We arrived at Muriwai Surf School at 10.15, signed in and were issued with wetsuits and surfboards. Then lesson began at 10.30 with instructions and practice on the grass area outside the surf school. The group then walked a short distance to the beach where they were given safety instructions and had some more practice on the sand.
They then headed into the surf. The instructors helped the trainee surfers by giving them advice in the water about what they were doing well and what they needed to do to stand up on the surfboards. After some practice, most of the group were able to stand on their board and get a short ride, but the strong wind did make surfing more difficult than usual.
After more than an hour of surfing practice, the group returned to the surf school and dried off. We said thanks to the staff of Muriwai Surf School and had something hot to eat at the nearby takeaways.
Our day at Muriwai Beach ended with a visit to the Muriwai gannet colony. These birds migrate to Australia in winter each year but during spring and early summer, they are in residence with many young chicks.
The colony is only a short walk from where we parked the van and the walk offers wonderful views along the coast to the south as well as over Muriwai Beach to the north.
We returned to our starting point at about 3pm.
